The first
Methodist Church in Hampton was
located on the south side of James Street. This was a Protestant
Methodist Church, and both the Baptist and the Methodist held
services in it. In time each group built their own Sanctuary. The
Methodists built a Church on what is now Oak Street And became a
Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The building stood somewhere near
9 Oak Street.
This building was used until 1908. Records show that a called
Quarterly Conference was held in Hampton on May1, 1907. A Building
Committee Was appointed with instructions that they develop
plans for a building, continue solicitation of funds, and secure a
suitable location.
The Parsonage for the circuit of churches of which Hampton was a
part stood on a piece of land, which is now our parking lot. The
records show that, at a Quarterly Conference held in Hampton on
September 7, 1907, it was voted that the Parsonage Trustees deed a
sufficient amount of the Parsonage property, as may be agreed upon,
for the church building. It was also ordered that the Trustees of
the Hampton Methodist Church sell the old Church and reinvest the
proceeds in the new Church Building.
It was noted in the Pastor's Report to the Quarterly Report of
December 19, 1907 that the Church" Is much better condition than
this time last year, The people having grown in grace in several
aspects, especially the grace of liberality." This was a fortunate
improvement due to build a new Church. The present sanctuary was
built in 1908, by what was known then as the Ohio plan. All
indebtedness was paid off and the Church was dedicated in 1909 by
Bishop Warren A. Candler.
During the Pastorate of the Reverend W.O. McMullin from
1916-1920 A new parsonage was built
on the site of the present parking lot, replacing the previous one.
During the pastorate of the Reverend H.G. O'Brian1945-1948, it was
remodeling and many changes were made.
As far as is known, the Hampton Methodist Church has produced two
Ministers: the Reverend S.H. Griffin,
a local Elder who preached at St. Peter's Methodist Church on the
Locust Grove Road: and the Reverend Warner Davis,
who grew up in the Hampton Methodist Church, attended Asbury
College, and became one of the outstanding Churchmen in Kentucky.
During the Pastorate of the Reverend J.H. Couch, 1948-1953,
the first section of the Church School Annex was built in his honor.
H.A. Stewart was Chairman of the Building Committee. The Sanctuary
was remodeled during the Ministry of the Reverend Allen Newby; it
was completed and dedicated during the Pastorate of the Reverend H.
Dan Rice. Bishop Arthur J. Moore preached the dedication sermon on
April 12, 1959.
Glenn Mitchell was Chairman of the Building Committee for the
remodeling. While Rev. Rice was Pastor, the Hampton-Lovejoy-Mt.
Carmel Methodist Men were organized. J.L. Sinback was the first
President, in 1958, the Hampton Church became a full-time
appointment, but the Methodist Men still remain a joint
organization.
During the Pastorate of the Reverend Norman Manning Jr.,
1959-1963
a children's building and Chapel were added to the Couch Building.
Miss
Kate Cooper came to live in Hampton upon her retirement after fifty
years of service with the Methodist Mission Board as a Missionary to
Korea. The Children's wing was named in her honor. The Chapel was
named to honor C.C. Glenn, who had given untiring service as
Chairman of the Building and Grounds during the building and
remodeling, Glenn Mitchell was Chairman of the Building Committee
during the construction. It was also during the pastorate of
Reverend Manning
that a Kindergarten was begun in 1961.
During the Pastorate of the Reverend Charles W. Green
additional property facing Georgia Ave. west of the present parking
lot was purchased. During the Pastorate of the Reverend Dr. Jesse H.
Warwick, the Parsonage on Woolsey Road was purchased. During the
Pastorate of the Reverend Jim Cantrell, improvements were made to
the Sanctuary both interior and exterior, including the restoration
and protection of the beautiful stained- glass windows. A new
kitchen was added and the fellowship hall was renovated and
completed in 1991. Tommy N. Smith was the Chairman of the Building
Committee.
During the Pastorate of the Reverend Charles W. Green
1994-1999, a new Adult Wing was added
to the Education Building. Richard L. McBrayer was Chairman of the
Building Committee. The wing was completed in 1998 and named in
honor of Reverend Charles W. Green. District Supt. James R. Mitchell
dedicated the Wing on April 25, 1999.
